- Introduction
The DMS HDD format tool is a utility which provides a means to format and
manage filesystems present on your PS2 HDD. You can create a new filesystem
for storing anything you wish - for example movies, mp3, roms. You can
remove a filesystem which is no longer needed to free up space on the HDD.
You can also expand the size of a filesystem if it has run out of space, and
you can rename an existing filesystem.
- Usage
When the DMS HDD format tool is loaded you are presented with the main screen
which consists of the filesystem list (top-left), the action panel (right)
and the status panel (bottom). The filesystem list displays the filesystems
which are currently present on the HDD. Filesystems are colour coded by
filesystem type. System filesystems are green, common filesystems (such as
those created by this format tool) are white and application filesystems
(such as those created by HDD enabled games) are yellow. Pressing up/down
will select a different filesystem. Statistics for the currently selected
filesystem are displayed in the status panel. Pressing left/right on the
pad will switch "focus" between the filesystem list and the action panel.
When the action panel is in "focus" you can press up/down to select one of
the 4 possible actions (as each is selected, a description for that action
will be displayed in the status panel). To perform the selected action press
X. At any time you can press triangle to abort the current action and return
to the main screen. The available actions are as follows:
* Create filesystem - Once this action is selected you will be prompted to
choose a name and size for the filesystem. The size must be above 128mb
and below the amount of free space left on the HDD. The APA partition
system which is used on the PS2 HDD requires filesystems to be a multiple
of 128mb, so any size you enter will be rounded to the nearest 128mb
(for example, if you wish to create a filesystem 3000mb large, the actual
size will be 2944mb).
* Remove filesystem - Will remove the selected filesystem after receiving
confirmation from the user.
* Expand filesystem - Will expand the selected filesystem. You are required
to enter a new size for the filesystem, which must be larger than the
current size of that filesystem. Once again the new size will be rounded
to the nearest 128mb.
* Rename filesystem - Will rename the selected filesystem. The new name
must be unique - if there is already another filesystem on the HDD with
the same name then an error will occurr.
- Formatting the HDD
If you load up the DMS HDD format tool and the HDD is not formatted, it will
prompt you to format the HDD. This will format the HDD with what is known as
the APA partition system, which is the partition system used by Playstation 2
software. You can force a re-format of an already formatted HDD by holding down
L1 + L2 + R1 + R2 when the format tool is at the loading screen. Be WARNED,
this will ERASE all current data on the HDD! |
